Speech Therapy

Speech therapy: an assessment first, then a run of sessions

Speech therapy runs in two stages: an assessment that ends in a report saying whether care is needed and of what kind, then a series of regular sessions spread over months. The assessment alone is useful even when it concludes that everything is fine — it settles a doubt that otherwise takes root.

What this specialist handles

  • Delayed appearance of speech and language in children.
  • Articulation and pronunciation difficulties.
  • Stammering, in children and adults.
  • Reading, writing and arithmetic difficulties at school age.
  • Voice disorders in people who use their voice heavily.
  • Language and swallowing rehabilitation after a stroke or a neurological injury.

When to book

  • When parents or the school notice speech that is less clear than that of classmates of the same age.
  • Stammering that persists or grows rather than fading.
  • Clear difficulty with reading or writing despite effort.
  • After a stroke, as part of rehabilitation.
  • Recurrent hoarseness in a teacher or anyone who works with their voice.

What the visit looks like

The first session is an assessment and runs longer: questions about pregnancy, birth and the early stages, then tests suited to the age. Bring the child health record, any earlier hearing report, and school results where reading or writing is the concern.

Care is then a series of sessions, often weekly, across several months. Part of the work happens at home: the therapist sets short exercises to repeat daily, and how regularly they are done weighs as much as the session itself.

Booking on Maouidi

  1. Install the Maouidi app on Android and create an account with your phone number.

  2. Search by specialty, then filter by wilaya.

  3. Open the practitioner or clinic profile: address, services, and how they take bookings.

  4. Pick your slot. Some practitioners work in fixed time slots, others hand out queue numbers for the day — the app shows which one each of them uses.

  5. Confirm. The appointment appears in the app, together with your queue number if the practitioner works that way.

  6. Turn up at the time or the number shown. Consultations are paid at the clinic. If something comes up, cancel in the app ahead of time so the place goes to someone else.

Before language work begins, hearing is usually checked — which is why the ENT path often runs in parallel. Both specialties appear separately, each under its own name, in the Maouidi list.

Common questions

At what age should we start?

An assessment does not wait for a particular age: where there is doubt, one evaluation session settles it, either by reassuring or by allowing an early start. Waiting for the child to “grow out of it” is what loses the time that could have been used.

How long does care last?

Usually several months of regular sessions, with the duration reviewed as progress is made. The therapist sets the rhythm after the assessment; there is no standard programme.

Does a parent sit in on the session?

It depends on the child’s age and on the work being done. Even when the parent is not present throughout, the home exercises go through them, so time is usually set aside at the end of the session to explain them.
