Psychiatry

Psychiatry: a doctor, not only someone who listens

A psychiatrist is a doctor: they completed medical studies and then specialised. They examine, diagnose, prescribe treatment where it is indicated, and follow it over time. That is what separates them from a psychologist, who works through conversation and psychotherapy and does not prescribe. The two often work on the same case, each in their own role.

What this specialist handles

  • Depression and mood disorders.
  • Anxiety disorders and panic attacks.
  • Sleep disorders when they are tied to psychological distress.
  • Bipolar disorder and psychotic disorders.
  • Medication follow-up and review of a long-term treatment.
  • Support after a hospital stay or after a traumatic event.

When to book

  • A situation that has lasted weeks and affects sleep, work or relationships.
  • A treatment you have been following that no longer does what it did.
  • Anxiety or fear that is starting to limit what you can do in a day.
  • When a GP or a psychologist refers you for a medical opinion.

What the visit looks like

The first consultation runs longer and rests mainly on talking: the history of what you are living through, when it started, what makes it worse and what eases it, and what you have already tried. Bring the names of any medicines you take, including those prescribed for something else.

What is said in the consultation is covered by professional confidentiality. You can come accompanied if that helps, or ask that the person waits outside for part of the conversation. Treatment does not automatically mean medication: the decision is built with you.

Booking on Maouidi

  1. Install the Maouidi app on Android and create an account with your phone number.

  2. Search by specialty, then filter by wilaya.

  3. Open the practitioner or clinic profile: address, services, and how they take bookings.

  4. Pick your slot. Some practitioners work in fixed time slots, others hand out queue numbers for the day — the app shows which one each of them uses.

  5. Confirm. The appointment appears in the app, together with your queue number if the practitioner works that way.

  6. Turn up at the time or the number shown. Consultations are paid at the clinic. If something comes up, cancel in the app ahead of time so the place goes to someone else.

In the Maouidi list, child psychiatry and addiction medicine are separate specialties with their own listings, as is clinical psychology. Choose the one that matches your request; if you are unsure, a GP can point you.

Common questions

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a doctor: they diagnose, prescribe medication and follow it up. A psychologist is not a doctor: they work through interviews, assessment and psychotherapy, and do not prescribe. The two paths complement each other and often run together.

Does what I say stay confidential?

Yes — professional confidentiality is a basic principle of medical practice. If you have a question about a specific point, ask it at the start of the consultation; you are entitled to know how your file is kept.

I am having thoughts of harming myself right now — what should I do?

Do not book and wait. Go to the nearest emergency department or call the emergency services immediately, or tell someone close to you who can stay with you until then. Maouidi is a booking platform and provides no crisis intervention.
