Orthopaedics and traumatology: after the fracture, before the surgery

This specialty is imagined as entirely surgical; in reality most of its consultations end without an operation — immobilisation, rehabilitation, or simply follow-up over time. Surgery is one possibility, not an inevitable outcome, and the consultation rests more on examining movement than on the image.

  • Back pain that runs down the leg or comes with numbness.
  • Follow-up after a cast is removed, or after an operation.
  • A limp in a child, or a visible difference between the two limbs.

What the visit looks like

The examination is functional: you will be asked to walk, to move the joint in specific directions, and to resist light pressure. Wear something that allows the area to be uncovered — shorts for a knee, a loose top for a shoulder.

Bring the images themselves, not only the reports: films, a CD, or digital files. A report without the image often means the scan has to be repeated.

Booking on Maouidi

  1. Install the Maouidi app on Android and create an account with your phone number.

  2. Search by specialty, then filter by wilaya.

  3. Open the practitioner or clinic profile: address, services, and how they take bookings.

  4. Pick your slot. Some practitioners work in fixed time slots, others hand out queue numbers for the day — the app shows which one each of them uses.

  5. Confirm. The appointment appears in the app, together with your queue number if the practitioner works that way.

  6. Turn up at the time or the number shown. Consultations are paid at the clinic. If something comes up, cancel in the app ahead of time so the place goes to someone else.

A fresh injury — visible deformity, inability to put weight on the limb, an open wound — belongs at an emergency department, not in an appointment. Orthopaedic consultations are for follow-up and for non-urgent pain. Physiotherapy is a separate specialty in the Maouidi list and often runs in parallel.

Common questions

I fell yesterday and my wrist is swollen — appointment or emergency?

A recent injury with significant swelling, deformity or inability to use the limb goes to an emergency department the same day. The orthopaedic consultation comes afterwards, for follow-up.

Do I need an X-ray before the consultation?

Not necessarily. If you already have images, bring them; if not, the practitioner chooses the right examination after examining you, and it is not always the one you would have asked for.

Does the consultation always end in surgery?

No. A large share of cases is managed with rehabilitation, immobilisation and monitoring; surgery is proposed when other options fail or when the injury requires it. General information; the decision is your practitioner’s.
